Wednesday night was my first ever "night ride."
Mountain biking at night poses several questions.... Who rides when it's completely dark outside?
Why ride when it's completely dark outside? And, cold. Dark. And SPOOKY.
I've wondered this myself, as I ride in the warm sunshine, enjoying beautiful scenery.
I now understand.
A few of my cycling friends an I are racing in the 24 hours of Moab on October 10th...this is just part of the training. I assure you, I won't be riding for 24 hours, though a few crazies...er, extreme endurance athletes are. I am a member of a "veteran" team, which is a fancy way of saying "old." I am the oldest of the group by a year, and as of this coming birthday, actually qualify now as "master." In 10 more years I'll be known as a "grand master." It is a lovely way to describe the aged.
My friends Jolene Knosack, Kendra Clark, and Jen Curry, and I form the "Great Dames" team, one of the 7 teams coming from our Mad Dog Cycles team. Wendy Cope (in the middle of the photo) just signed on for all this crazy action, and having just a few races under her belt, it on a "just for fun" team.
Jolene took a little video, though watching this will make you wonder why someone does ride at night...
We all plan to have a lot of fun! Tomorrow is the "12 hours of Sundance" race. Training. Fun.

That looks like a ton or fun! I really like seeing the night fotage.
I can't wait until you run right into a mother moose and her calf, or some other noctural beast of burden.
I guess you have friends in the ER that I don't so you'd be fine. Looks like fun though!
Hey Dorth--A New Post! Man I snooze for a couple days, and missed 2 updates! For the record -I check--and love any info! Way Fun night ride!! I'm glad you remembered lights! We were up a couple of weeks ago and forgot lights--I know Dumb. Anyway--the whole time I was so perinoid about mountain lions that I was biking crazy and hit a huge rock, then smashed my knee on a rock --How dumb can I get? Anyway---After that I didn't really care about the mountain lions--more about how to get out of there! You need to school me--I wish we could ride more. It's just not fair! Looks like a blast!
Hi Dorth--I got so excited to see your comment! I have been thinking of you--and definitely need a post! What's new! How's the family?
